Why Is Big & Tall a Necessary Chair Requirement?

Office chairs today are all about ergonomics. We’ve evolved in our understanding of what people need to be properly supported through an entire working day. Unfortunately many of us need to save some cash when purchasing a new office chair, so instead of adjustable ergonomics, we purchase built-in ergonomics instead. This is a large problem for the big & tall demographic.

Once you get taller than 6 feet, the built-in lumbar supports become less than beneficial. They tend to place your sitting bones more forward than needed and this places extra weight on the hips, knees, and feet. Now add in the fact that the chairs are often not tall enough to meet your needs and you’ve got a problem. Your feet should be flat on the ground, but the standard chair makes those who are big & tall place their ankles flat on the ground.

Big & tall chairs combine what the population demographic needs with what modern office furniture can provide. The bases of the chairs are reinforced to hold upwards of 400 pounds in some cases. There is added height added to the pneumatic lift so feet can be flat. There’s even additional width built into the chair so you don’t have to feel like you’ve got to hold your breath just to fit between the armrests. That’s why these design aspects are a necessary requirement.

How Can I Find the Best Big & Tall Office Chair?

Unfortunately not every big & tall office chair has been created equally. Many manufacturers like to use this label to describe their chair without it actually being a big & tall office chair. If the chair back is tall and the chair is bigger than average, you’ll often find the product described as big & tall instead of meeting the needs of the big & tall.

That’s why it is so critical to read reviews on the office chairs you’re thinking about purchasing. Why spend hundreds of dollars on an office chair that might not meet your needs? By knowing if the design has been made for you or it’s all just a marketing ploy to get a few more clicks, you can have more confidence in the fact that the chair can do what it says it will do.

The XL description does not indicate a chair is big & tall. Always check the actual measurements of the chair before finalizing a purchase.

Do I Need a Big & Tall Office Chair?

If you weigh more than 250 pounds or you are taller than 6’4”, then you automatically qualify for needing a big & tall office chair. You might fit into regular office chairs, but shopping for something that accommodates the big & tall is to your advantage. Not only is the framing and pneumatics reinforced in these chairs, but there is often more cushioning added throughout the chair as well.

Big & tall office chairs also tend to have better casters and taller armrests as additional supports. This allows for the chair to have the expected mobility it needs for the office environment while placing a person’s arms, elbows, and wrists at the proper height and angle. A taller than average backrest usually completes the design.

Look for these key features as well when shopping for a big & tall office chair.

  • Height adjustments. Your chair should be tall enough to get your feet flat on the floor and still allow you to sit comfortably.
  • Depth adjustments. Some tall folks have longer legs. Others have longer torsos. A depth adjustment can help the seat depth accommodate upper leg lengths as needed so the thighs and needs can be in the proper position.
  • Angle adjustments. You should be at eye level with your screen. You should be upright, but not stretched. You should be able to recline when needed. These adjustments can all be made with the best big & tall office chairs.

What Are the Prices of Big & Tall Office Chairs?

Big & tall office chairs have traditionally had a 10-25% premium on their pricing structure when compared to regular chairs. It’s the same issue that big & tall folks face when shopping for clothing and other needed items. Because “more materials” are needed to create the chair, a higher price becomes justified. Thanks to sites like Amazon equalizing the playing field, the pricing premiums have just about been eliminated today.

That means most people will be able to find a big & tall chair for about $200 today. There are options above and below this price point that can meet some specific needs. It means that just about anyone today can afford an office chair which can meet their unique physical requirements.

What Do Our Reviews Have To Say?

Alera Merix 450

This big & tall office chair can support up to 450 pounds. It provides a superior sitting experience thanks to its breathable mesh backing and reinforced cushion padding. We loved the built-in lumbar support because it really does give those who are a little taller the help with their backs that they may need. There’s plenty of width within the seating area of the chair, but the fabric itself can become a bit irritating from time to time. Overall it is sturdy and easy to put together, so it should definitely be a top consideration today.

OIF Mid-Back Swivel

This is one of the widest chairs we’ve ever seen come our way. It can easily accommodate someone up to 450 pounds and there’s a good chance you’re not even going to touch the arm rests with your sides in this chair. For some that might be a first. The only real complaint we have with this particular big & tall office chair is how it gets assembled. The seat cushion must be joined to the seat back and that can be difficult flying solo. Otherwise this chair is comfortable, supports all the right places, and is a great purchase.

Hon Mesh Back

With adjustable height and width arm rests, the integrated support system of this office chair can support 400-450 pounds pretty easily. The upholstery is black fabric and features a breathable mesh that works in all but the most humid of conditions. We enjoyed the accuracy of the tilt with tension control and the ability to effectively lock the tilt when necessary. Users can also adjust the lumbar support when needed for added comfort. The arms do take a little getting used to with this chair, but overall this was a great experience.

Comfort Products Commodore II

A traditional design that accommodates the big & tall? It’s possible with this beautiful executive-style office chair. Made from leather and supportive of up to 400 pounds, the chrome base provides a solid foundation for users so that the chair can be continually used. We weren’t big fans of the padded arm rests because there really isn’t much padding there. It has all of the adjustments you’d expect and the adjustable headrest like an automobile’s is a nice final touch.

Alera Ravino

This model from the manufacturer’s big & tall office chair series might just be the best chair there is. It’s nice and wide, offering a pillow-top seat and reinforced back for some added comfort. We’re not big fans of the nylon casters since we can see those breaking down over time, but the 22 inches between the arms helps to make up for this somewhat. Watch out for the support pistons because they may fail with overuse, especially for those in the 350-400 pound range.
