What To Look For in Office Chairs Under $100

The quality of your office chair can directly affect your health if you sit in it for long periods of time. A poorly design chair can create muscle strains and pains like you wouldn’t believe. Forget about just having a pain in the neck. You could have a pain in your lower back, your arms, your hips, your knees, and even in your ankles. To avoid these issues, here are some of the key points to look for in the modern office chair priced below $100.

  • How it reclines. How the glide mechanism of your office chair operates is surprisingly important to the comfort levels an office chair can provide. Being able to recline smoothly while being productive simultaneously can reduce the pressure on the spine and the bones that support you when you sit.
  • How tall it is. An office chair should allow you to place your feet flat on the floor or on a foot rest. You should also have your arms be parallel to your working surface and your hamstrings should be parallel to the ground. If the chair is too tall, you can cut off circulation to various parts of the body. If the chair is too low, it will put more pressure on the hips.
  • An office chair that is too long tends to make people sit up too straight, putting pressure on their back, legs, and wrists. If it is too short, then you’ll be focused on trying to stay in the chair.

Armrests and back support are also important considerations. Having some firmness for your lower back and arm rests that are positioned properly can meet your needs pretty effectively. If your current office chair is making you feel like you’ve been hit by a train after a long day at work, then consider upgrading your chair by spending less than $100 today on a chair that is more supportive of your needs.

Consider Seat Material and Mobility For Your New Office Chair Under $100

With this price point, the most important factor to consider in the seat material is its comfort. When value shopping for a new office chair, looks aren’t everything. There are some aesthetically pleasing chairs that can be found, but if they don’t support your weight very well, then ultimately you’ve wasted your money. Don’t be afraid to return a chair that does not provide you with an appropriate level of comfort.

How the chair allows you to move is also important. It is more likely to find stationary chairs at the under $100 price point than at any other price on the market today. If you have a small workstation and don’t have a need to reach, then a stationary chair could be the right purchase. Most offices, however, require some level of multitasking and that typically means having a chair that can slide around the working space from time to time. Look for office chairs that provide free movement.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of an Office Chair Under $100

The clear advantage of an office chair under $100 is its price. You won’t wreck a budget most of the time with a purchase at this level. Even families living paycheck to paycheck can often afford one of the office chairs in this category.

The disadvantage of this price point is that the chair has low levels of durability. Any consistent use of the chair will cause wear and tear that will require a replacement in 2-3 years in most circumstances. This issue can be offset by looking for quality materials in the cushion of the chair somewhat, but entry-level chairs are almost never as durable as executive models.

Office chairs priced below $100 tend to need some extra supports or innovation to maximize their usefulness as well. You may need a plastic mat under your chair to help move it or protect your floor. A pillow on the cushion can raise you up enough to properly type or give you an extra boost of lumbar support. Chairs that have arms that are too high, which bunch up the shoulders, may benefit from not having the arms on it at all.

The bottom line is this: you’ve got to try the chair out to see how it feels. Then don’t be afraid to adjust the chair to make it more comfortable.

What Are the Prices of Office Chairs Today?

At the under $100 price point, the average office chair is going to cost around $75. At this price point, you’ve got two basic choices: a task chair that has upgraded features or a basic office chair that provides more supports. Your working habits will dictate which option is best for you. If you are in and out of your chair a lot during the day, then a task chair might be the better choice. Prolonged sitting should always occur in an office chair designed to be supportive.

What Do Our Reviews Have To Say?

Lorell Adjustable Stool

This task chair combines the best of a stool and the best of a task chair. We particularly liked the foot rest installed at the bottom of the chair so that people of all heights can have a comfortable sitting experience. The back of the chair is adjustable so more support can be had when needed. It’s also been designed with a shell back and a slight waterfall cushion for better durability and comfort. If you don’t mind the fact that there aren’t any arms on this chair, it is a great value for any home or business.

Ave Six Vista

This task chair is like a throwback to the 1970s in some ways. It’s been made with a padded vinyl seat and back, which may not be an advantage if you live in a warm, humid environment. It does offer a one-touch height adjustment system and it swivels 360 degrees for easy multitasking. This office chair also comes in three colors, including a vibrant pink, to give you a splash of color if wanted. The best part of this under $100 office chair, however, is the heavy duty chrome finished base. This is a solid chair at a great price.

Laura Davidson Trendsetter

Not only does this office chair have a nice modern look to it, but there are some decent ergonomics incorporated into the design as well. The mesh back of the chair is curved for some added lumbar support and the cushion is made from a high density foam that is remarkably comfortable. We’re a little leery of the plastic frame of the chair, described as high-impact, but there’s no denying the value of the metal frame base. If we could change one thing about this chair, it would be the arms. There’s space for the elbow, but no real way to rest the forearms.

LexMod Veer

On a good day, you can find this office chair right at the $100 mark despite its $210 MSRP by shopping on Amazon. If you do find it at that price point, then get it. Not only does it have some ingenious flip-up arms that are highly supportive, but the breathable design helps to work with less levels of fatigue even when there is a need to work prolonged hours. It offers tilt tension control and the sponge seat cushion is remarkably comfortable. This is definitely one of our favorite office chairs – at any price point.

Flash Furniture Computer Chair

This is your basic computer chair that provides all of the basics really well. At 26.5 inches wide, there’s plenty of sitting space and the curved arm rests add to the comfort level. Height adjustments and tilt controls are available as well. It’s a black fabric upholstery that is easy to clean and is surprisingly supportive. The chair swivels for better multi-tasking and its mid-back design is remarkably inviting. It holds 250 pounds. The tilt tension knob is this chair’s one weak point. We can see this breaking on someone making daily adjustments.
